DIP POWDER AND OUR TAKE ON IT

OPI’s Powder Perfection Dip Powder.

OPI’s Powder Perfection Dip Powder.

Dip nails are all the rage as of late amongst clients. Although you may have heard that they stay longer and are stronger, there are still some facts to know before trying.

The pros. They are made from acrylic so they are a lot tougher and can withstand more wear than gel polish. They do not require a lamp to adhere and harden so you don’t have to worry about UV exposure. Here at Hello Birdie, we use LED lamps. If you like the feel of acrylic nails, this leans more to an acrylic nail than to a gel polish nail. So you have that thicker coverage if you like that.

The cons. Since these are made from acrylic, the removal process takes a bit longer to soak. On that same note, if you end up peeling these types of nails off…the damage is more extensive than gel. We get a lot of people in our salon that say they are trying to "get their nails to come back” after having Dip Powder.

Another thing to be aware of is that it isn’t necessarily sanitary if the salon you are going to is actually dipping your nail in this product straight out of the tub. Even if they are pouring the product over your nail but letting the excess fall back off into that same tub. That means they are dipping EVERYONE’S nails in this SAME tub. This leaves you highly susceptible to nail infections as you don’t know what condition all the previous nails that have been dipped were in (nail fungus, cuts and open wounds, etc.).

One sanitary way to dip nails is to pour product into disposable portion cup to only use for the one appointment and to discard after as seen in OPI’s tutorial.

Although Dip Powder is often marketed as an “organic” product it is still bonding agents and chemicals. Organic bonding agents? Just something to think about if you were hoping Dip would be a “natural” alternative.

Now personally, for Hello Birdie, we do not offer Dip Powder services. We are wary of the sanitation and since cleanliness is of upmost importance to us this just does not align with our mission. We also love, love, love hand painted nail art. Dip powder does not offer us the versatility to use the product in ways we would need to get the artistic results we continue to strive for. Theoretically, you could paint on top of dip powder, but now you are defeating the purpose of not using a lamp and may as well have just stuck with one process.

All hail hand painted!

SUPER KAWAII NAIL DESIGNS

Sometimes the cutest nail art comes from those times at the end of the day when the salon is quiet and the Birdie Babes have a chance to play around a bit.  This fun nail art featuring yummy crepes is a perfect example of just that!  When I look at this nail art It reminds me of the little crepe stands that you can find on so many street corners in Tokyo!  Perhaps the gals didn't intend for this to be Japanese nail art but to me it certainly is super Kawaii!!!
